Ali Fazal’s international project Victoria and Abdul have nominated at the Oscars 2018 in Best Costume and Best Makeup and Hair category. Victoria & Abdul is British biographical comedy-drama film directed by Stephen Frears and written by Lee Hall. The film is based on the book of same name by Shrabani Basu, about the real-life relationship between Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and her Indian Muslim servant Abdul Karim. It stars Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Michael Gambon, Eddie Izzard, Tim Pigott-Smith and Adeel Akhtar.
On this news Ali Fazal commented, “I’m so proud of my film. I know the hardwork that was put in with every department and specially the costumes and make up. And to hear we have gotten nominated in both categories is in itself a big achievement. I remember sitting for hours in a day just for my fittings and markings . And how meticulously Consolata Boyle would tailor them to match the period we were depicting. It was like watching a painter unravel a masterpiece. The same goes for Daniel Phillips, a golden globe winner, who was responsible for all our looks. We tried several looks for days and finally locked the one you see in the film. Its constantly changing in sync with the costumes through the film. Subtle changes. I am glad the academy saw that. My best wishes to all the other nominees as well.”
The film had its world premiere at the 74th Venice Film Festival, and was theatrically released on 15 September 2017 in the United Kingdom and 22 September 2017 in the United States.
The film was nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 90th Academy Awards, and Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (for Dench) at the 75th Golden Globe Awards.
